During 1983, the study of offshore wind energy conversion systems (OWECS) was commenced to assess the viability of offshore wind power, to define design criteria for an offshore WECS prototype, and to outline a plan for the design, construction and operation of a possible joint prototype.
In pursuit of these objectives, five sub-tasks were initiated:
- Data collection and compilation
- Conceptual design of an OWECS power station
- Development of design spec i fications
- Generic studies
- Structural dynamics study
A considerable number of major reports and papers were contributed to the study. Following the Task's completion, the general feeling about the prospects for offshore was now more optimistic than it had been previously.
